There in your lab all the instruments might be such that generate lots of data and if you run your experiments all the time then you want to be sure that your precious – without a tiniest hint of sarcasm – data is securely stored & sealed, safely saved constantly as you generate the data.

Storing (saving/writing) such data in real-time and in a secure manner is critical. Often a moment later, immediately this data should (read must-be) be ready for further processing, for analysis which might take you months. You need to have authorized access to all this data and be in control of managing those. Then archives at some point - even though you think digesting data is done and you have your results - might be inevitable, because of a "human tissue act" or some such thing.

You are going to build/start a lab so, you contemplate different ideas - that is if you have basic understanding - and ponder over possible best lab design. Setting a lab and designing supporting computer infrastructure does not equal to a mission to Mars, but you are serious and fully dedicated to it - as you always are - so you ask: how to make it work best!?
